A message to FRSD Families and Staff
Dear Fern Ridge Families and Staff,
Like many of you, I am deeply saddened by the news of a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend earlier today. Our hearts and thoughts are with everyone impacted by this tragic event.
News like this is particularly alarming when it occurs so close to our own community. We know it can bring up feelings of fear, sadness and worry, especially for families sending their children to school each day.
I want you to know that keeping our students and staff safe is something we take seriously every single day. Across Fern Ridge, we have safety plans and emergency operating procedures in place, our staff regularly practice how to respond to emergency events, and we work closely with local law enforcement. Our Middle School and High School do not have school tomorrow due to parent teacher conferences, however our elementary students are in session. If your child needs any extra support, please reach out to your classroom teachers or building principals.
Just as important are the strong, caring relationships we build with our students, families and one another. These connections help create school communities where students feel safe, supported and comfortable reaching out to a trusted adult when something concerns them.
Supporting Students and Families
In the coming days, some students may have questions, while others may feel worried or anxious. We encourage families to check in with their children, listen to their concerns and offer reassurance in ways that are appropriate for their age.
Our school counselors and support staff are available to help students who may need additional care or someone to talk to. Again, please do not hesitate to reach out to your school's administration if your child needs support.

As we keep the Bend community in our thoughts, I want to thank our staff, families and community partners for the care you show our students and one another every day.
Sincerely,
Gary Carpenter, Superintendent, FRSD 28J
