Foster Care
Resources:
Foster Care is defined as substitute care for children placed by DHS away from their parents in other settings, including: foster family homes, homes of relatives, group home, emergency shelters, pre-adoptive homes, etc.
Students in foster care have additional rights, such as:
- access to immediate enrollment in school
- transportation to/from school or origin
- access to free meal services
Fern Ridge School District’s Foster Care Point of Contact (POC) is Rilke Klingsporn, Director of Special Programs (contact information above). The POC is responsible for ensuring students in foster placements are fully integrated into the school setting and have the supports they need. This includes:
- Acting as a liaison between FRSD and DHS caseworkers, resource parents, other districts, and community services
- Coordinating district services, including: enrollment, meal plans, and transportation
- Notifying appropriate district staff of status and needs
- Maintaining/directing updates/changes to student information systems
- Supporting building staff in situational incidents
